(LOT 1259)
1927 Original 8" x 10" Type 1 Charles Conlon/Underwood & Underwood Pie Traynor News Service Photograph - PSA Encapsulated

The Pittsburgh Pirates Pie Traynor is considered one of the greatest third baseman in the history of Major League Baseball. Traynor led the National League once in fielding percentage, assist and doubles three times and seven times in putouts. But he was not too shabby at the plate either posting a .320 batting average with 2,416 hits, 1,273 RBIs in more than 7,500 plate appearances over 17 seasons. Amazingly, he only struck out 278 times in his career. Presented is an original Type 1 Charles Conlon photograph of the great Pirates' third bagger. Conlon revolutionized sports photography as he set up shop just outside the lines during games allowing him to capture the essence of players, posing or in-action. Charles Conlon photos are some of the most significant and most valuable Type 1 photographs in the hobby and this classic 8" x 10" image catches Traynor warming up before a game. This remarkable relic from the 1927 season remains in superb condition with only minimal expected aging apparent and light surface abrasions, none of which detract from the Hall of Famer at work. The reverse of this PSA encapsulated marvel displays the Underwood & Underwood stamping with "Traynor - Third Base - 1927 - Pittsburgh Pirates" penned in Conlon's hand in black in at center. No other flaws are visible. This is a beautiful image well worthy of its subject's Hall of Fame status.
