(LOT 1243)
1912 Original Burke & Atwell Boston Red Sox World Champs 7-1/2" x 10" Type 1 Team Photograph - PSA Encapsulated

The 1912 Boston Red Sox crushed American League foes and won the AL pennant by an astounding 14 games over the Washington Senators led by Hall of Fame hurler, Walter Johnson. But the best was yet to come. Facing John McGraw's New York Giants in the World Series, Boston kept Giants Hall of Fame hurler Christy Mathewson at bay as he went 0-2 with only 10 strikeouts. Smokey Joe Wood, on the other hand went 3-0 with 21 Ks. Following Wood's Game 1 victory, Game 2 was called at 6-6 in the 11th inning due to darkness, making this the second of only three games in World Series history to end in a tie. (Current rules forbid this from occurring.) The 1912 Red Sox prevailed winning 4-3 in an eight-game series. Presented here is an original 7-1/2" x 10" Boston Red Sox team photograph from Chicago's Burke & Atwell Press Photographers. The photo displays the BoSox squad in front of the grandstand with the last row sitting in the first row. Mild touches are visible at the edges of this borderless image with light corner creasing, a ½" tear at right edge and minute paper loss at the bottom right corner. The back still holds the original paper caption with the "Burke & Atwell Press Photographers" stamp at center and a penciled "1912" at left.
