Legendary Cooperstown Inductee Larry Doby was the inaugural African American to play in the Junior Circuit! After Jackie Robinson broke the MLB "Color Barrier" on April 15, 1947 with the Brooklyn Dodgers, Cleveland Indians owner Bill Veeck piggy-backed off of Branch Rickey's courageous move by signing Larry Doby to an official MLB contract on July 3, 1947. Two days later, Doby would make his inaugural MLB appearance on July 5th at Comiskey Park with the White Sox hosting the Indians. Doby would strike out as a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning in his first official MLB plate appearance, with the seven-time All-Star center fielder ultimately enjoying an outstanding 13-year Hall of Fame career.
