1952 Topps #209 Signed Howie Fox PSA 3.5 VG+ Card Grade; PSA AUTH Auto
Deceased: 1955; Grade Pop: 1; Pop Higher: 1; Total Pop: 5
No ordinary common, Phillies right-handed twirler Howie Fox was the first player from the 1952 Topps set to pass away; tragically stabbed to death in a bar fight in 1955 and ultimately leading to only five of his 1952 Topps cards being signed by Fox. Although his final MLB game was in 1954 with the Orioles, Fox continued to pitch "professional" baseball, playing in the Texas League for the San Antonio Missions in 1955. At that time, he purchased a San Antonio tavern, and on October 9, 1955, he was stabbed three times outside of the establishment while throwing three rowdy patrons out of his bar. He sadly died by the front door in an effort to get back into the bar. A drunken John Strickland was immediately arrested and charged with Fox's murder.
