Ultra-Scarce Mickey Mantle Signed/Endorsed New York Yankees August 9, 1978 Payroll Check PSA 9 MINT AUTO GRADE
Here is one collector's rarely see! While there is an abundance of Mickey Mantle signed memorabilia circulating throughout the hobby, seldom does an ultra-scarce New York Yankees Payroll check payable to the "Mick" surface for the taking. Even after his retirement at the end of the 1968 campaign, Mantle kept close ties with the New York Yankees who paid him for on-going spring training coaching, royalties from his playing days, and an abundance of marketing/public relations appearances, etc. This, along with a myriad of card show signing events, his popular New York City 'Mickey Mantle's Restaurant & Sports Bar", and a job as a customer-relations representative for a Dallas-based Life Insurance Company all combined to keep Mickey and his wife Marilyn financially comfortable until his tragic passing on August 13, 1995 from his body ultimately rejecting a transplanted liver. This particular Yankees Payroll check was issued to Mantle on August 9, 1978 in the amount of $810.00, paid against the popular New York based Chemical Bank. Mantle's Texas address of 5730 Watson Circle - Dallas Texas, 75225 is typed on the left side of the document, with an August 22, 1978 bank stamp indicating the day when Mantle officially cashed this $810 check. Of additional interest is the classic New York Yankees red, white and blue logo situated near the upper left quadrant, with its brilliant hues still retaining a majority of their original luster.
Of course, the most significant aspect is the imposing "Mickey Mantle" blue ink signature/endorsement on the verso that PSA has justifiably granted a "9 MINT" assessment due to its bold and smooth flowing presence. No glaring flaws are evident, with this 44-year-old keepsake eluding any tears, paper loss, or surface blemishes typically plaguing a myriad of vintage cancelled checks. The mystique of Mickey Charles Mantle commenced during his 1951 rookie campaign, largely in part due to his uncanny goliath-like power that led to Mantle ultimately blasting at least ten 500 ft.+ round-trippers throughout his spectacular 18-year career. His mammoth clout off of Senators hurler Chuck Stobbs in 1953 at Griffith Stadium ricocheted off of the scoreboard into a neighboring back-yard across the street, traveling a record-breaking 565 feet from home plate! On two occasions, the "Mick" crushed horsehide spheres off of Yankee Stadium's right-field facade, and no player will ever hit more tape-measure home runs than the supernatural-like Mickey Mantle. He ended his illustrious career with 536 round-trippers and seven world championships, with his unparalleled leadership and power combining to place his mementos as among the most widely sought-after sports collectibles. That said, if you are seeking an obscure Mickey Mantle autographed keepsake, none could boast the utmost prestige and rarity of this "one of a kind" August 9, 1978 Yankees Payroll check that would immediately augment any world-class autograph or "Commerce Comet" collection!
