(LOT 2133)
1971-1979 "Sports Challenge" Signed Contract Collection (109) BAS COAs and LOAs

From 1971 to 1979, Sports Challenge, hosted by Dick Enberg, ran weekly in syndication pitting current and former athletes against one another in a team sports trivia competition. After showing a brief film clip, Enberg would ask a related clip-related question to which the three-player panel would ring in and answer. Each team would be play for a chance to win $500 worth of sports equipment for a youth organization of their choice. Notable trios included Chicago Blackhawks Bobby and Dennis Hull and Stan Mikita, NBA Greats, Super Bowl champions and even challenged the Casey Stengel-managed New York Yankees of Sauer, Mantle & Martin against the Joe McCarthy-led Yanks of Gomez, DiMaggio & Henrich. Offered here is a comprehensive collection of 109 signed contracts from 68 contestant athletes, primarily from the NFL, who tested their knowledge before tens of viewers during eight-year run in the 1970s. Each contract included one live show and one rerun for the exorbitant sum of $317.63, though some of the more sought-after athletes landing a whopping $500 for one episode and a rerun. Included in this array are George Allen, Lyle Alzado (the tragic face of the steroid-era of the 1980s), Tony Dorsett, Otto Graham, Paul Hornung, Tom Landry, Bobby Layne, Sid Luckman, Don Meredith of Monday Night Football, Jim Plunkett, Gale Sayers, O. J. Simpson, Y.A. Tittle and Bob Waterfield to name a few. Reruns of the show would late air on ESPN during the network's early days of building viewership. This is an excellent collection of signed documents of some of the football's greatest names, so don't pass on this assembly!
