(LOT 1969)
Strikingly Displayed 1961/62 and 1962/63 Shirriff/Salada Hockey Coins Sets Presented in Hand-Made Wooden Shields!

Collectors are known to create some pretty unique displays for their prized pieces and the offered 120-coin 1961/62 Salada and 160-coin 1962/63 Salada hockey coin sets may not be very scarce, but the wooden presentation shields are absolutely unique and creations of the highest quality. We're not even sure how anyone today could possibly make these shields. When first viewed, our thought was that these must have been made for an executive at Salada. The quality is over the top! Each one-inch-thick shield is perfectly lathed and finished solid oak or maple without a single flaw in craftmanship or professional precision. Each shield is an exact twin of the next with a miniature NHL logo affixed at the top center of the plaque. Featuring the Original Six NHL franchises for the 1961/62 set, the plastic coins present in overall VG to EX condition due to some paper separating from the plastic backing and can be removed or replaced through the reverse holes drilled behind each coin. The 1962/63 metal coins are slightly nicer in EX to EX-MT condition overall. The shields alone elevate the desirability of the offered set far beyond the value of the coins alone. It's a unique offering for a fairly common collectible!
