(LOT 734)
"Unique for the Grade" 1954 Bowman #185 Daryl Spencer Correct ".933/.936 Fielding Avg." Variation - PSA 10 GEM MINT – "POP 1": The SOLE Highest Graded Example!

A "one of a kind" treasure, this PSA 10 GEM MINT 1954 Bowman #185 Daryl Spencer "POP 1" offering just happens to stand alone at the top of the PSA "Pop" Chart as the finest of its kind! It should be noted that this #185 subject is the CORRECT and scarcer ".933/.936 Fielding Average" variation (as opposed to the incorrect ".941/.944 version). In 1953, Spencer handled 480 chances at 2nd base, 3rd base and shortstop, and was charged with 32 errors. This equated to the correct .933 fielding average, with the Bowman Gum Company originally printing an incorrect ".941" fielding average for the 1953 season. As was the case with 40 different 1954 variation cards, Bowman fixed their statistical errors, reissuing the 40 erroneous subjects reflecting correct stats, with the Daryl Spencer subject being one of those variations. Spencer played more than half of his 1-year MLB tenure with the Giants, both in New York and San Francisco, with this infielder specialist actually missing the 1954 and 1955 campaigns due to his military service. The slick fielding shortstop, second sacker and third baseman never looked better than in this supreme marvel that reveals Spencer providing the camera with a beaming smile. Donning his N.Y. Giants home flannels, the vibrant hues and almost pastel-like setting are absolutely breathtaking, with the extremely well-centered image residing between four bright white borders. Four ultra-sharp corners still depict their original right-angled formations, and the surfaces reflect a super fresh aesthetic. A bona fide "10" to say the least, we can only imagine the myriad of advanced PSA registry Set collectors already standing in line to make this museum worthy gem their own!
