(LOT 523)
1947 Bond Bread Jackie Robinson "Running Down Baseline" (1949 Distribution) PSA 5 EX – "POP 4"; Only 2 PSA Examples Graded Higher!

The 13 Bond Bread Jackie Robinson cards were distributed over a three-year period from 1947 – 1949. While all 13 subjects are labeled as "1947" by both PSA and SGC, in reality, the only documented 1947 subject is the Portrait-Facsimile Autograph subject that stands as Jackie's true rookie card. The distribution for the remaining 12 cards via a Homogenized Bond bread loaf were evenly split, with six subjects issued in 1948 (Spring/early Summer) and the remaining six cards released in the late Summer of 1949. Distinguishing the two distribution years (1948 vs. 1949) are the different ad backs, with the versos of the six 1949 subjects revealing a Jackie portrait image not included on the 1948 versions. Presented here is one of those 1949 issued cards, a superb PSA 5 EX "Running Down Baseline" marvel that along with three other specimens, has been bested by only two paltry copies! By 1949, Robinson had established himself as one of baseball's premier players, and the '49 campaign would ultimately be his finest season with Jackie claiming the N.L. MVP Award via his league leading .342 batting average and 37 stolen bases.

He would add 203 total hits, 16 homers, 12 triples, 122 runs scored and 124 R.B.I.s to his impressive resume, rightfully dubbed as the league's best player. One of baseball's all-time baserunners, it is fitting that the Bond Bread Bakery manufacturer chose an imposing image of Jackie running towards home plate, with this particular example exhibiting world-class clarity and contrast. Centered towards the left edge, no glaring flaws are evident, and the 1949 distribution year is validated by the third ad-back variation that includes a Robinson portrait image and a different Jackie quote followed by his facsimile autograph: "MY FAVORITE 'AT HOME' PLATE IS THAT GOOD BOND BREAD. IT TASTES GRAND AND PACKS LOTS OF ENERGY!". A true 1949 Jackie rookie-era card issued during his only MVP campaign, its "rare for the grade" assessment has only been bested by two PSA subjects!
