1962 Topps #1 Roger Maris PSA 8 NM-MT

TOUGH NUMBER 1!!! It comes as little surprise that the renowned Topps Chewing Gum Company would select the iconic Roger Maris as their number one subject for their popular 1962 Topps compilation. On the last day of the 1961 campaign, Maris drove a Tracy Stallard fastball into Yankee Stadium's right-field seats to eclipse the "Sultan of Swat's" magical 60-homer mark, ending the storybook 1961 season with an unprecedented 61 round-trippers! For the entire season, Maris and Mantle relentlessly chased the "Babe's" homer record, with Mantle unfortunately bowing out of the race in September with a hip injury. Of course, Maris would ultimately set the new single-season dinger record, and Topps appropriately awarded the American League MVP the prestigious #1 checklist spot.

Presented here just happens to be a remarkable PSA 8 NM-MT 1962 Topps Roger Maris marvel that has only been bested by a paltry six examples on the illustrious PSA 'Pop" Chart! As meticulous collectors surely realize, the 1962 Topps cards are plagued with numerous surface issues due to their super condition-sensitive wood-grain borders. Along with the 1911 T205 Gold-Border Tobacco issue and 1971 Topps Black-Bordered subjects, 1962 Topps cards reside among the most condition-sensitive cardboard collectibles extant, with this particular offering somehow defying all the odds to elude any noticeable border wear. The classic Maris batting image is crystal-clear, and is atypically extremely well-centered between four super clean wood-grain borders. Pack-fresh surfaces are the final compliments for this 1962 gem that truly stands as one of the most significant Maris issues in its current high-grade state!
