1933 Goudey #92 Lou Gehrig PSA 7 NM
As is the case with a majority of the 1930's issued sets, one of the key players in the 1933 Goudey compilation is the immortal Lou Gehrig, with the illustrious Goudey Co. issuing two different subjects of the powerful "Iron Horse" (#s 92 & 160) due to his magnificent stature. Presented here is Gehrig's #92 subject in an absolutely breathtaking PSA Near Mint 7 holder, and considering that a PSA 8 example fetched an unfathomable record-breaking $303K in the 2021 Dr. Newman auction, it is clearly obvious that the pricing points for high-grade Gehrig Goudey's are in the midst of being re-written. A countless number of elite enthusiasts search for Lou Gehrig's most eclectic cardboard mementos and why not? Above everything else, the "Iron Horse" was the supreme model of courage, and his batting superiority led to an unfathomable 13 consecutive seasons of 100+ R.B.I.s and a spectacular .340 lifetime batting average. Tragically, his incredible career was cut short by the deadly "ALS" disease (now more commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease) which took his life at the tender age of 37. For all of his "on the field" slugging accomplishments, he will always be best remembered for his staggering 2,130 consecutive game streak.
Furthermore, his incomparable farewell "Luckiest Man on the Face of the Earth" speech will forever stand as our National Pastime's Gettysburg Address, unequivocally embracing a solemn nation. Fortunately for collectors, Gehrig's iconic Charles Conlon batting image was issued on two separate Goudey subjects, and this #92 Goudey offering reflects the imposing eye appeal expected from any near mint card. You can literally feel Gehrig's unparalleled strength via his classic batting stance that emanates fine resolution, rich hues, and near-perfect contrast. The brilliant powder blue background projects Gehrig's timeless batting stance in remarkable fashion, and the four right angled corners only reveal microscopic wear. No glaring blemishes are evident, and the legendary Conlon image exhibits relatively fine centering. Only a year after this Goudey subject was issued, the future Yankee Captain would claim the American League's Triple Crown, and with Babe Ruth's skills rapidly diminishing due to age, the "Iron Horse" was now the main cog in the Bronx Bombers' lineup. Issued during the height of Gehrig's playing excellence, this magnificent offering truly stands as a grand testament for his iconic stature, with the breathtaking aesthetics justifying the highly-coveted PSA 7 assessment and its rightful place in any world-class gathering!
