(LOT 175)
1933 Goudey #172 Billy "Pinky" Hargrave PSA 8.5 NM-MT+ – "POP 3" – Only One PSA Example Graded Higher!

RARE '33!!! One of the more formidable catchers of his time, Billy "Pinky" Hargrave played ten MLB seasons from 1923 thru 1933 for the Senators, Browns, Tigers and Braves, skipping only the 1927 campaign. He ended his career with a respectable .278 lifetime batting average and .976 fielding percentage, with his finest season being 1929 when he compiled an outstanding .330 average with the Detroit Tigers. While Hargrave's life was sadly cut short when he succumbed to a sudden heart-attack in November 1942. Fortunately for the bygone backstop, his legacy will forever remain intact via this magnificent pack-fresh PSA 8.5 NM-MT+ offering. One of a mere three PSA examples at this hallowed plateau, it has only been best by a single PSA 9 specimen!

One of the major highlights of this "elusive for the grade" memento is the near-perfect centering of Hargrave's classic portrait image. Flanked by snow white borders, the radiant yellow setting creates an almost "3D" effect for the timeless pose, with the extremely clean surfaces ending at blistering sharp edges and four right-angled corners. A bona fide "keeper", it stands as one of Hargraves most imposing cardboard keepsakes, defying nearly 90 years of potential wear to retain a majority of its original factory-issued attributes!
