(LOT 44)
1933 Goudey #35 Al Simmons PSA 9 MINT – "POP 3" – Highest Graded PSA Example!

AL SIMMONS!!! Sheer perfection at its best, this unfathomable PSA 9 Mint 1933 Goudey Al Simmons wonder stands alongside only two other examples as the finest example on the planet! To place the near-impossible existence of this lofty grade in perspective, PSA has currently encapsulated some 94,000+ '33 Goudey subjects, with a microscopic 0.2% reflecting the elusive "9 MINT" assessment. Hall of Famer Al "Bucketfoot" Simmons is one of the most under rated hitters in baseball history, playing 12 of his 20 seasons with Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics. His nickname was given to him due to his odd batting stance, pointing his left foot towards 3rd base and defying the "don't step in the bucket" hitting philosophy. Well, in Simmons case it worked because he compiled 2,927 hits to the tune of a .334 lifetime batting average. He also knocked in over 1,800 runs which included 11 consecutive seasons of 100+ RBIs, four times he topped the .380 mark (including two seasons over .390), and still holds the Major League record for most single season hits by a right-handed batter when he stoked 253 hits in 1925.

After his retirement in 1944, he served as a coach with both the Athletics and Indians, before abruptly succumbing to a heart attack directly after his 54th birthday on May 26th 1956. Fortunately for ole "Bucketfoot", his legacy will echo for eternity with this "9 Mint" Goudey that literally defies the standard laws of physics via its original factory-issued presentation. One of the most colorful Goudeys in the landmark 240-card set, its background violet, orange, green, and yellow hues combine to effectively portray Simmons' classic batting pose in a brilliant manner. Indeed, we cannot imagine a more sparkling image on any Goudey subject than this enthralling illustration extremely well-centered between four blinding white borders. Additional world-class qualities include razor-sharp corners that could draw blood, virtually immaculate surfaces, crystal-clear clarity, and superior contrast, all of which combine to justify the notion that this particular example just might have merited the nearly impossible to find "10 Gem Mint" assessment (there are only 13 PSA 10 Goudeys for ALL 240 subjects). Unquestionably residing as Al Simmons most desirable and valuable cardboard memento, its super rare "9 Mint" pinnacle grade earns it a permanent niche in any of the premier 1933 Goudey collections!
