(LOT 7)
Extraordinary 1933 Goudey #1 Benny Bengough PSA 8.5 NM-MT+ - "POP 1"; Only 1 PSA Example Graded Higher!

POP 1 BENNY!!! Presented here is one of the most extraordinary high-grade 1933 Goudeys extant! A time-defying PSA 8.5 NM-MT+ masterpiece that stands alone at its current assessment, only bested by a single PSA 9 specimen! Catcher Benny Bengough may never achieve Hall of Fame immortality, yet his astonishing PSA 8.5 NM-MT+ 1933 Goudey #1 subject presented here certainly qualifies for Cooperstown cardboard stature. Its undisputable "POP 1" status placing it among the most coveted commons for advanced PSA Registry collectors. Remarkable as it may seem, PSA has encapsulated some 600 Bengough examples, with only a single PSA 9 Mint copy surpassing this miraculous offering.

It is no secret with respect to the excruciating task of locating "high-grade" #1 subjects, for as the most sophisticated collectors surely realize, #1 cards were typically placed at the top of the stack and subjected to various condition-damaging scenarios including rubber band marks, stains, perimeter impairments, sunlight, and other general surface wear issues. Somehow... someway, throughout the past 89 years, the previous owners of this exalted subject meticulously preserved its original factory-issued attributes with the utmost care and handling, for one look at this timeless wonder instantly sparks the notion of a pack-fresh card that was pulled from a 1933 Goudey wax pack. Ironically, even a recently unearthed baseball card from a 21st century wax pack can potentially reveal flaws such as printing anomalies and poor centering that are non-existent to this PSA 8.5 Bengough marvel. Born in Niagara Falls, New York on July 27, 1898, catcher Benny Bengough made his MLB debut with the New York Yankees on May 18, 1923, joining forces with the incomparable Babe Ruth in assisting the Yankees in capturing their inaugural world championship.

An excellent defensive catcher, he played ten years in the Majors including eight with the New York Yankees from 1923 thru 1930, winning three world championships in '23, '27 and '28. He ended his career with the St. Louis Browns and compiled a modest .255 lifetime batting average, with this final 1933 Goudey subject portraying him in his period-style Browns uniform and catcher's gear. Crystal clear clarity, extremely rich hues, a seemingly flawless red background, scintillating corner tips and a brilliant surface all contribute to the accurate assessment. The candid Bengough image exhibits near-perfect centering, a virtually impossible achievement that firmly stands as one of the major highlights of this awe-inspiring memento. Indeed, as most would agree, finding a well-centered #1 Bengough Goudey subject issue is synonymous with finding a needle in a haystack.

The final compliments are super clean borders and the reverse side's bold green typography. As a sheer testament for its potential stratospheric value, the two previous PSA 8 NM-MT '33 Goudey Bengough examples fetched imposing $66K and $60K pricing points. Considering there are six known PSA 8 Bengough specimens, we cannot even begin to fathom the true value of this "POP 1" PSA 8.5 offering that has only been bested by a single PSA 9 Bengough. This is certainly a scenario whereby we will defer to the most esteemed hobby enthusiasts to ultimately decide its true worth, seriously taking into account that it doesn't take a Hall of Famer to spur record-breaking price tags. That said, we cordially invite the most advanced PSA Registry Goudey collectors to "jockey for position" in one of the most highly anticipated bidding wars to claim final ownership of this unique PSA 8.5 Bengough gem!
