(LOT 1635)
Ultra-Scarce 1958 Jackie Robinson Signed Blood Donor Card – Full JSA/James Spence LOA

Jackie Robinson boldly breaking the MLB color barrier in 1947 forever secured his baseball immortality, with his signed artifacts highly coveted in the collecting community due to his untimely death in 1972 at the young age of 53 (well before the advent of mass autograph signings). Indeed, Jackie's iconic stature places him right alongside the likes of Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams, Mickey Mantle and so many more of baseball's greatest heroes. With all due respect to signed checks and photos, the inspiring backstory of this vintage Jackie Robinson signed 1958 Blood Donor memento elevates it to lofty heights. On March 8th,1958 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, a group of women and the American Red Cross sponsored a "My Fair Ladies Day" for blood donations. The great Jackie Robinson (who lived nearby) and movie-star Charlton Heston took time out of their busy lives to appear for this inspiring event. The always classy Jackie neatly scripted a bold autograph on this 3" x 5" Blood Donor card in attractive green ink, revealing eye pleasing flow and depth, with a mint Jackie signature. To the best of our knowledge, only one other similar Blood Donor card is known to have survived, with the other example reflecting distractive writing from an unknown hand. A magnificent association piece, this ultra-obscure keepsake reveals the true heart and character of this vital American hero who not only revolutionized our National Pastime, but more significantly, placed an indelible stamp on a growing effort to weed out the racial injustice that had plagued America since the signing of our Declaration of Independence!
