(LOT 1468)
1961 Fleer Basketball Complete Ungraded Set
The 1961 Fleer Basketball set was the first from the Fleer Company and the last major, league-wide release for them until the heralded 1986-87 issue. Offered is a completely ungraded set of the 1961 release. There is a small sect of the collecting hobby that consider cards high-grade if they are as issued by the factory, or look as if they just came from a pack, regardless of centering. That sect has shrunk dramatically over the years and particularly since the advent of grading. This would be a dream set for those collectors as nearly every card is likely as nice today as it was the day it was pulled from a pack, but would not fair very well due to the scrutiny of current professional grading due to centering. Most of the cards are centered 75/25 or worse with only a handful being 70/30 or better. While we are refraining from technical grades since centering would override those assessments, the key cards in this otherwise pack-fresh set include #s: 1 Attles (95/5 L-R), 3 Baylor (85/15 L-R angle cut on top and bottom), 8 Chamberlain (off-cut L-R with a touch of the next card over showing on the right edge), 36 Robertson (97/3 L-R), 38 5/95 R-L), 43 West (93/2 L-R) & 47 Chamberlain IA (off-cut R-L with a touch of the next card over showing on the left edge). Regardless of centering issues on this strikingly colorful issue, this is a tremendous opportunity for a collector that would love a fresh, clean set of one of the most prominent and as such out of reach, sets the basketball hobby will ever offer.
