(LOT 1193)
1912 Henzel Studio Jim Thorpe Carlisle Indian School Real Photo Post Card PSA 3 VG

CHAMPION CARD!!! Jim Thorpe was nothing short of a true champion. His skills and abilities were unmatched, certainly during his time, and garnered him accolades only the most elite of athletes could achieve or wish to capture. Starring for the Carlisle Indian School, Thorpe was a Consensus All-American in 1911 & 1912. At 25, he won gold in the Decathlon and Pentathlon at the 1912 Stockholm Olympiad. In 1913, he began a six-year career as a professional baseball player with the New York Giants and in 1920, Jim joined the Canton Bulldogs as a tailback and played eight seasons in the NFL.

Thorpe is in the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame. Offered here is a rare 1912 Henzel Real Photo Postcard from the Carlisle Indian School featuring Jim Thorpe in a crouched position as if at the starting blocks. This black and white, in-studio image measures 3-1/2" x 5-1/2" with Thorpe at top and a lower footer stating "JAMES THORPE (Indian) – FROM THE CARLISLE INDIAN SCHOOL – THE WORLD'S CHAMPION ATHLETE". "PHOTO BY HENZEL" is typed at the bottom right. Aging apparent, but now significant flaws are apparent for the PSA 3 VG encapsulated example. These rare cards feature arguably the greatest athlete in history, but most certainly of his era.
