West spent nearly 20 years as a player and coach for Los Angeles before taking over as GM from 1982 to 1994. He was a 14-time NBA All-Star, 4X All-Defensive First Team member and in 1969 he was named NBA Finals MVP despite his team losing to the Boston Celtics. As a player he led his squad to the 1972 NBA Championship and as a GM, his teams, featuring Hall of Famers Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and James Worthy, among others, won six championships.
