1921 Schapira Bros. Babe Ruth "Over the Fence" Subject - SGC 3 VG – "Pop 1; Only 5 SGC Examples Graded Higher!

This ultra-scarce 1921 Schapira Bros. Babe Ruth "Over the Fence" SGC 3 VG offering stands as the only specimen at this desirable plateau with a mere five examples graded higher! Ironically, the "Over the Fence" title was so appropriate for one of the seven Ruth candy card subjects utilized to promote the popular Schapira candy brand. The image is strikingly similar to one of Ruth's iconic Boston Red Sox batting poses from 1919, but in this case, the NEW YORK caption has been placed across the Babe's jersey since he now played right-field for the New York Yankees.

Indeed, baseball's "transaction of the century" was engineered by Boston's eccentric owner Harry Frazee, who sent Ruth to the Empire State for the hefty sum of $125,000 to help fund his Broadway musical comedy "No, No Nanette". The card itself reveals Ruth completing his mighty swing, bat still affixed to his lead right hand as the "Sultan of Swat" watched another long ball sail towards the grandstands. The 1921 campaign would see the Babe launch a record 59 round-trippers, more than justifying the "OVER THE FENCE" caption that resides beneath Ruth's spikes. He would also post an incredible 1.359 OPS while knocking in 168 runs and batting .378, easily making the '21 season one of his finest ever. One of the Bambino's scarcest early Yankee cards, it has defied a century of time by retaining a majority of its original candy box aesthetics!
