(LOT 351)
1921 Schapira Bros. Babe Ruth "They Passed Him" Subject - SGC 5 EX – "Pop 1; Only 1 SGC Example Graded Higher!

Of the seven different 1921 Schapira Bros. Candy Ruth subjects, one of the rarest variations is "They Passed Him", with this "scarce for the grade" SGC 5 EX offering one of toughest Babe Ruth early Yankee cardboard mementos on the planet. Its strong "5" technical assessment places it as the sole copy at this desirable mid-grade plateau with only a single SGC specimen graded higher! Interestingly enough, "They Passed Him" implies that Ruth has been "pitched around" and walked; however, the image of Ruth dropping the bat and leaving the batter's box could also mean he has just walloped another majestic home run towards the furthest confines of the ballpark. Certainly, this was a frequent occurrence for the combined 1920 and 1921 seasons, with the "Colossus of Swat" smacking an amazing 113 round-trippers in those two campaigns, forever revolutionizing baseball with his supernatural power. Neatly cut from the popular 1921 Schapira Bros.

Candy Box, the purchaser was able to redeem 250 candy box cards for an autographed Babe Ruth baseball. Every box included a portrait image of Ruth on one side, with the box's opposite side reflecting one of five possible "in-action" images. Ruth's iconic central image virtually "turns back the clock" to an era when he was ravaging opposing pitchers with his mammoth long balls, and embarking on the greatest batting career in baseball history. As previously stated, the Babe is dropping his bat as he leaves the batter's box, with the blue and red striped background still portraying its original vivid hues. In the lower left corner is the text "THEY PASSED HIM", and the manually cut perimeter includes four somewhat square corners. At the time this was written, SGC had only encapsulated seven other "They Passed Him" examples, placing it as one of the most elusive of all Babe Ruth Yankee cards!
