(LOT 350)
1921 Schapira Bros. Babe Ruth "Portrait" Subject - No Side Arrows - SGC 2 GD – "Pop 7"

If you are looking for an early 1920s Babe Ruth cardboard memento that won't "break the bank" such as the 1921 E121 Ruth, then this "SGC 2" 1921 Schapira Bros. Ruth Portrait (no Side Arrows) offering is the one for you! One of the earliest Babe Ruth Yankee baseball card issues are the seven different subjects hand-cut from the 1921 Schapira Bros. candy boxes, for which purchasers were able to redeem 250 candy box cards for an autographed Babe Ruth baseball. Every box included a portrait image of Ruth on one side (some portrait cards included arrows pointing down on each side vs. no arrows), with the box's opposite side reflecting one of five possible "in-action" images. This 1921 Schapira Ruth portrait image (no arrows on each side variation) has only been joined by six other examples on the SGC "Pop" Chart, downgraded due to some light wrinkles and standard corner wear. Yet, most significantly, the captivating portrait central image residing within a baseball has stubbornly defied "father-time", retaining a majority of its original facial hues and bold red background. Appropriately achieving a numerical grade since its "hand-cut" status still includes the perimeter's original dotted lines, it merits serious attention from any sophisticated Ruth enthusiast!
