(LOT 349)
1921 Schapira Bros. Babe Ruth "Portrait" Subject - Including Side Arrows - SGC 5 EX – "Pop 1"; Only 2 SGC Examples Graded Higher!

One of the most eclectic and earliest Babe Ruth Yankee cardboard issues are the seven different subjects hand-cut from the 1921 Schapira Bros. candy boxes, with purchasers able to redeem 250 candy box cards for an autographed Babe Ruth baseball. Every box included a portrait image of Ruth on one side (some portrait cards included arrows pointing down on each side vs. no arrows), with the box's opposite side reflecting one of five possible "in-action" images. Presented here is the 1921 Schapira Ruth portrait image including the arrows on each side, graded a spectacular SGC 5 EX that places it as the sole copy at this extremely rare mid-grade tier with only two SGC examples graded higher! Due to the typical manual cuts that were not realized outside the dotted line perimeter, finding mid-grade Schapira Bros.

Ruth subjects is an excruciating endeavor, with approximately half of the total population revealing an "Authentic" assessment. This offering portrays solid EX aesthetics justifying the grade, with the colorful Babe Ruth portrait image, bold red background and redemption prize text all retaining striking visual appeal, and atypically eluding any glaring surface flaws. Most significantly, joining the fine aesthetics is the inclusion of virtually all of the outer perimeter dotted lines, substantiating the numerical grade. One of the "Sultan of Swat's" earliest Yankee baseball card subjects, its 1921 issue date, brilliant red hues and "5 EX" assessment all combine to place it as one of the most formidable Babe Ruth Yankee cards issued at a period in time when the Bambino was placing an indelible stamp on the "Big Apple!"
