(LOT 224)
1933 Goudey #188 Signed Rogers Hornsby (PSA AUTHENTIC) – Only 5 PSA Encapsulated Examples!

By 1933, Hall of Fame second baseman Rogers Hornsby was certainly in the twilight of his amazing career, having recently managed the Chicago Cubs and about to go back to Missouri to manage the hapless St. Louis Browns. In 1926, the "Rajah" did lead the Cardinals to a World Championship, during a time when he was still considered the most formidable hitter in baseball history. One of the two 1933 Goudey Hornsby issues was his #188 subject that depicted the immortal Cooperstown Inductee in a managerial image.

Presented here is this popular Goudey card sporting an extremely rare "Rogers Hornsby" black ink signature across his white flannels. Revealing approximate "6/7" strength, the card's obverse side portrays fine aesthetics consistent with a "VG-EX" example, with a "9-6-33" date affixed along the verso's upper right edge. While we don't know with 100% certainty, we can only assume this might suffice as the date Hornsby signed this hallowed keepsake, with the verso also reflecting an area of paper loss within the "BIG LEAGUE – CHEWING GUM" caption. It should be noted that the a #188 Goudey signed Hornsby subject fetched $24K in a public auction back in August 2020, substantiating the ultimate prestige of this seldom surfacing world-class heirloom!
