(LOT 219)
1933 Goudey #89 Signed Tris Speaker (PSA 3.5 VG+/AUTO 8 NM-MT) – One of Only 3 PSA Encapsulated Examples!

One of the rarest signed 1933 Goudey Hall of Famers is an exalted example of Tris Speaker, who along with Cobb, DiMaggio, Mays and Griffey, Jr., is considered one of the greatest centerfielders in baseball history. That said, this extraordinary autographed 1933 Goudey #89 Speaker subject is now yours for the taking, graded a splendid PSA 3.,5 VG+ while boasting a majestic "Tris Speaker" green fountain pen script that has been graded a PSA 8! Its rarity is confirmed by the prestigious PSA "Pop" chart that lists only two other signed Speaker specimens, with the last public sale of an inferior example fetching over $18K in August 2020. The "Gray Eagle's" illustrious career commenced with Boston in 1907, and while he played sparingly for the Red Sox in 1907 and 1908, Speaker's breakout season came in 1909 when he accumulated over 600 plate appearances and recorded a stellar .309 batting average.

The rest of the story is history for the highly skilled Speaker finished his incredible 22-year career with an amazing 3,514 safeties to the tune of a .345 lifetime batting average that suffices as the sixth finest figure in baseball history. Nearly impressive as his magnificent batting skills was the fleet footed Speaker's remarkable defensive prowess that enabled him to play an extremely shallow centerfield. This ultimately led to Speaker accumulating the most outfield assists in baseball history, with his 449-record setting figure besting the second place Cobb by an overwhelming 57 margin (including a single-season record of 35 assists in his first full 1909 season). His iconic batting pose reveals Speaker completing his classic swing as he most likely has scorched another line-drive safety. Modest corner/surface wear account for the 3.5 assessment, and there are no glaring flaws on either side. Most significantly, the bold green ink "Tris Speaker" autograph is neatly penned across his period-style uniform, truly justifying the strong "8" assessment and placing this extremely scarce offering as one of the most noteworthy signed 1933 Goudey subjects you will ever come across!
