(LOT 216)
1933 Goudey #160 Signed Lou Gehrig Goudey (PSA 5 EX AUTO GRADE) – One of Only 4 PSA Authentic #160 Examples!

This incredible 1933 Goudey #160 Lou Gehrig subject has been autographed by the "Iron Horse" with a PSA 5 EX Auto Grade, one of only four PSA encapsulated signed Gehrig #160 Goudeys!  Scripted "L Gehrig" in light pencil to the right of Gehrig's hallowed Charles Conlin batting pose, the signature is a classic later 1930s autograph typically seen in the 1937/38 campaigns.  Obviously, only four PSA certified signed Lou Gehrig #160 Goudeys is not remotely enough to accommodate the advanced collecting community.  Over the past several years, the pricing points for signed Goudey Gehrigs have risen to staggering heights, spearheaded by the iconic "Uncle Jimmy Collection" that realized $218K for an autographed 1934 Goudey #37 Gehrig subject in 2020. Certainly not an anomaly, other Uncle Jimmy signed Goudey Gehrig cards (1933 #92 & 1933 #160) have likewise achieved record setting prices of $201K and $195K, respectively, and an autographed 1934 Goudey #37 Gehrig without any collector provenance realized $150K in a 2020 public auction.  Similar to an uncontrollable brushfire, the pricing anomalies for these extraordinary signed Goudey Gehrigs have literally "Leaped off the chart", with newly auctioned examples seemingly achieving record values each and every day.  It would certainly make sense for these Goudey Gehrigs to finally escalate in value, especially considering modern signed rookie cards such as Mike Trout ($3.8 million) and LeBron James ($5.2 million) realized earth-shattering prices in 2020. If signed cards for modern sports heroes such as Trout and James can record historic-like pricing, what is the true value for Henry Louis Gehrig's scripted cards, especially considering that Gehrig played over 80 years ago and resides as our National Pastime's greatest all-time first baseman.  It therefore cams as little surprise that the renowned Cambridge, Massachusetts Goudey Gum Company would issue two separate Gehrig subjects when they released their landmark 240-card 1933 Goudey baseball card set.  The "Iron Horse" continued his batting exploits throughout the '33 season, belting 32 round-trippers, knocking in 140 runs, and posting a .334 batting average, and considering the sports memorabilia market is currently realizing a pricing frenzy for signed "high-profile" Hall of Famer rarities, a scripted 1933 Lou Gehrig Goudey certainly stands as one of the most exalted autographed sports cards extant. Its unlimited investment potential is substantiated by an un-signed PSA 8 example fetching a record-setting $303K in our illustrious Dr. Newman auction. Considering there are 44 PSA encapsulated "NM-MT 8" #92 Goudey subjects and only four scripted #160 Goudeys, it is clearly obvious that the autographed Goudey Gehrig presents far greater rarity and value upside.

The classic Gehrig central batting image has eluded any glaring surface flaws, with the bold powder blue background strongly projecting the timeless Gehrig image. Of utmost significance is the seemingly "timeless" "L Gehrig" signature that is scripted to the right of Gehrig's left leg.  As previously stated, this is a 1937/38 style Gehrig autograph, with the eloquent "L" leading directly into the "G", a standard trademark of Gehrig autographs from the later 1930s. One of the magnificent aspects of this grand offering is the "VG" to "VG-EX" quality of the card itself, synonymous with Gehrig's unquestionable stature as our National Pastime's greatest all-time first baseman. Typical even corner wear revealing slightly rounded corners are the harshest flaws we can detect, with the 89-year-old masterpiece eluding any glaring surface blemishes. In closing, any autographed collectible of the "Iron Horse" is widely sought-after within the collecting community, let alone one that reflects his hallowed signature on arguably Gehrig's most iconic baseball card extant.

NOTE: The title and description for the signed Lou Gehrig Goudey have been updated to reflect the appropriate PSA 5 Autograph Grade (previously presented as a PSA 5 Card Grade).
