(LOT 18)
1916 M101-5 #12 Lute Boone Blank Back SGC 4.5 VG-EX+ – Only 5 Examples on the COMBINED SGC & PSA "Pop" Charts!

No ordinary "common" by any means, the significance of this SGC 4.5 VG-EX+ 1916 M101-5 #12 Lute Boone blank back subject cannot be overstated. The #12 subject in the set, it was the replacement card for the original #12 Beals Becker "Short-Print" that was changed to Boone early during its distribution. Justifying its scarcity is the COMBINED SGC & PSA "Pop" Charts that list only five Lute Boone examples, ironically falling one short of the ultra-desirable/valuable Beals Becker #12 subject that reveals six encapsulated copies on the prestigious SGC/PSA "Pop" Charts! Furthermore, Lute Boone was not included in the subsequent M101-4 series. Utility infielder Lutellus Boone played five seasons with the Yankees and Pirates, ending his uneventful career with Pittsburgh in 1918. Primarily a second baseman, Boone also played shortstop and third base, with his slick fielding ability far outweighing his light hitting skills (he ended his career with a futile .209 lifetime batting average). Yet, as is the case with an abundance of rare "commons" in the sports card hobby, it is the sheer existence of this mid-grade offering that "steals the show", for locating any Lute Boone M101-5 example is synonymous to finding "a needle in a haystack!"
