(LOT 17)
1916 M101-5 #9 Dave Bancroft Rookie Card – Blank Back SGC 4 VG-EX – "Pop 1"

Along with his 1916 Fleischmann Bakery issue, the 1916 M101-5 Blank Back #9 Dave Bancroft subject truly resides as one of his two rookie cards, presented here in a super eye pleasing SGC 4 VG-EX holder. An SGC "Pop 1" specimen, it has only been bested by four examples on the illustrious SGC "Pop" Chart. Hall of Famer Dave Bancroft broke into the Major Leagues in 1915 with the Philadelphia Phillies and enjoyed his finest seasons with the Phillies and Giants. The popular switch-hitter was a tremendous shortstop with quick feet, soft hands and a strong arm, batting over .300 five times in his prestigious 16-year career. Several times he led the league in putouts, assists, and turning over double-plays, while being a major cog in the New York Giants early 1920s championship runs. Likewise, his stellar black & white batting image depicts championship caliber with its spectacular contrast and clarity. His left-handed swinging pose is set against a classic grandstand backdrop, with the image favoring the left edge. Relatively clean surfaces have eluded any glaring flaws, the final thumbs up for one of the key HOF rookie cards in the world-class M101-5 compilation!
