(LOT 16)
1916 M101-5 #186 Zach Wheat Blank Back SGC 4 VG-EX - "Pop 1"; Only 1 SGC Example Graded Higher!

One of the key components of the illustrious 1916 M101-5 set, Zach Wheat's #186 subject was the replacement card for the inaugural #186 Bobby Wallace "Short-Print" that was changed to Wheat early during its distribution. Justifying this SGC 4 VG-EX Blank Back's scarcity is the SGC Census Report that lists only six Zach Wheat examples (PSA's "Pop" Chart only lists two copies), with this "Pop 1" rarity only bested by a single SGC specimen! Its highly coveted stature stems from its utmost rarity, and the fact that the player represented on this card is one of the most popular "Big Apple" Hall of Famers. Wheat's "on the field" heroics are personified by his .317 lifetime average, 1918 batting title and a throwing arm leading to him averaging an incomparable 15 annual assists throughout his brilliant Brooklyn Dodgers career. His well-centered throwing image depicts spectacular registration and contrast, framed by relatively clean borders and corner wear consistent with the grade. The lack of any obtrusive surface flaws is the final compliment for this seldom surfacing obscurity that resides as one of the most significant subjects in the historic M101-5 gathering!
