(LOT 1746)
Satchel Paige 1943 Original Type 1 Photo in KC Monarchs Uniform PSA Encapsulated

Considered one of the greatest pitchers of all-time, Satchel Paige broke into professional baseball in the 1920s and made his last appearance in the 1960s for the Kansas City Athletics. Paige was a true showman and entrepreneur. He would pick up his glove and play anywhere if the price was right. When his regular season ended in the Negro Leagues, he would either go play in Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, or the Dominican Republic. He also supplemented his income by barnstorming across the United States and fielding a team of Negro League All-Stars to take on any Caucasian ball-club that would pay his asking price. It has been said that he would pitch up to 150 games a year in his prime.

Offered for the very first time; this freshly discovered 8" x 10" Type 1 photo features Satchel Paige in his Kansas City Monarchs baseball cap and uniform demonstrating his underhanded pitch to a fellow teammate (off to the left-hand side of the photograph in Stars uni) during his 1943 Satchel Paige All-Stars tour.

On the back of this photo is a paper caption that reads, "Page having a little pepper ball with himself. He's quite a clown."

Stamped dated November 22, 1943.

In addition to the photograph, we've discovered some original articles (as shown) dated November 20, 23rd, and 24th that reported on Paige's West Coast barnstorming tour where they played against teams in Northern California at Seals Stadium and Cardinal Stadium where his team played against the likes of Major Leagues such as Bill Rigney, Mike McCormick, Walt Judnich, Ferris Fain, and Emil Mailho (who were all in the U.S. Armed forces at the time).

Original Paige photos in his Negro League garb rarely surface, making this a possible one of a kind historic gem!

Encapsulated by PSA as a TYPE 1 photo and additional full LOA from PSA included as well.
