(LOT 1704)
c.1920-21 Rogers Hornsby PSA Type 1 Encapsulated Underwood & Underwood Photo - Measures Approx. 5-1/2" x 6"

This outstanding Underwood & Underwood Type 1 photo portrays the great Rogers Hornsby in one of his finest batting poses extant, with "The Rajah" arguably standing as our National Pastime's greatest all-time right-handed hitter (with all due respect to Aaron & Foxx). The immortal Hornsby was widely considered baseball's foremost batter during the 1920s via his unfathomable five-year run from 1921 thru 1925 that produced three .400+ batting seasons and a record-setting .401 batting average over that historic span!

Player/manager Hornsby would eventually lead his Cardinals to the 1926 World Championship, with Game 7 being saved by the legendary Grover Alexander who, in the 7th inning of relief, struck out Tony Lazzeri with the bases loaded while seemingly in the midst of a serious "hangover" from the night before. This PSA Encapsulated Type 1 image depicts "The Rajah" in a stoic batting illustration, with fiery determination in his facial expression that literally terrorized pitchers throughout the 1920s. The 5-1/2" x 6" image reveals absolutely brilliant contrast, with the borderless photo exhibiting some modest edge chipping along the right and left edges, as well as a photographer notation near the upper right corner. No obtrusive flaws are evident and the flip side reflects the critical Underwood & Underwood credit stamp, an additional "thumbs-up" for one of the most awe-inspiring Hornsby images on the planet!
