(LOT 1684)
c. 1910s Harry Vardon Teeing Off as Old Tom Morris Looks On 7" x 9-1/2" PSA Type 2 Vintage Encapsulated Photo

Considered the first golf superstar, Harry Vardon won the Open Championship a record six times and the US. Open once. He was also a member of the heralded "Great Triumvirate" alongside James Braid and John Henry Taylor, the latter of which may be the closely monitoring opponent watching Vardon from behind. This PSA encapsulated photo is marked "St. Andrews" on the reverse in pencil, and as was and still is often the case in golf, spectators line the tee boxes and viewing areas eager to get a glimpse of the champions up close. However, today's fans and players (for that matter) are clad slightly more casual. The vintage image of Vardon and Morris reveals corner tack marks, minor surface wear and a vertical crease through his opponent standing behind the Golf Hall of Fame's Inaugural Inductee. The back shows minor toning and spotting with pencil inscribed photographer notes "Please return to Cossell & Cromb" and "Photo by Downie St. Andrews" with other very faint pencil notations. Two of golf's first Hall of Famers at golf's oldest golf course in the world.
