(LOT 1679)
c. 1910s Chief Meyer with New York Mayor William Gaynor 5" x 7" PSA/DNA Type 1 Encapsulated Authentic Brown Brothers Photograph

John Tortes "Chief" Meyers enjoyed some excellent success early on backstopping the 1911-1913 National League pennant winner New York Giants. Catching for the likes of Hall of Famers Christy Mathewson and Rube Marquard, Meyer helped lead the John McGraw-led Giants to three consecutive pennants. Offered is a 5" x 7" Brown Brothers photograph of Chief Meyers shaking hands and posing with then-New York City Mayor William Gaynor and another gentleman. The encased image shows minimal edge wear aside from a chip on the right edge and minimal missing corners at the bottom. Unobtrusive surface abrasions are visible with darker shading at the bottom border. The reverse has three stamps for Brown Brothers, New York with the penciled photographer notation "Mayor Gaynor shakes hands with Chief Meyers the Giants' Indian Catcher". Meyers and the Mayor!
