(LOT 179)
Super Scarce 1906 Lincoln Publishing Eddie Plank (SGC Good+ 2.5) – "Pop 1"; Only 2 Graded Higher on the Combined SGC & PSA "Pop" Charts!

Courtesy of Eddie Plank's iconic T206 marvel, his "turn of the 20th-century" hobby status ranks right alongside the likes of Cobb, Wagner and Mathewson. Indeed, when the ATC placed Carl Horner's legendary Eddie Plank portrait pose on a T206 subject that was inadvertently short-printed, "Steady Eddie's" hobby popularity soared to stratospheric heights. One of Plank's earliest cardboard issues pre-dating his T206 is the ultra-elusive 1906 Lincoln Publishing postcard, part of a 20-card set commemorating the Philadelphia Athletics 1905 American League championship (the Athletics would ultimately lose to the N.Y. Giants in the Fall Classic). Presented here is a striking SGC Good+ 2.5 Plank "Pop 1" gem that stands as one of only six encapsulated copies on the combined SGC and PSA population reports! Interestingly enough, Carl Horner struck two legendary Plank portrait images in the early-1900s, both of which were utilized on Plank's two W600 Sporting Life Cabinets.

The immortal T206 Plank pose was utilized on the later issued 1904 Type 4 W600 while the same Lincoln Publishing portrait image (also the work of Carl Horner) was affixed to Plank's Type 1 W600 true rookie card originally issued on September 27, 1902. Indeed, this museum worthy scarcity includes the Plank pose depicted on his undisputed 1902 W600 rookie card, a momentous accolade for an offering that merits serious hobby accolades. Hall of Famer Eddie Plank is one of our National Pastime's greatest southpaws, owner of 326 victories, a .627 winning percentage, 2.35 lifetime E.R.A. and a staggering 69 shutouts! Plank teamed up with Chief Bender to form one of the finest righty/lefty tandems in baseball history, and the aesthetics of this world-class memento are likewise Cooperstown worthy. An imposing oval portrait image "steals the show" with the sepia-toned pose retaining a majority of its original vibrant hues. All of the accompanying verbiage is bold and vivid, no glaring surface flaws are evident, and the unmarked postcard verso is super clean. Even corner wear is the primary culprit for the grade, and most would agree this remarkable Plank keepsake has stubbornly defied "father-time", presenting itself as a superior example for one of his rarest cardboard heirlooms extant!
