(LOT 430)
1940 Play Ball Near Set 239/240 all PSA Graded Registry Set #8 missing #27 Williams (Lot 429)

REGISTRY SET!!! Loaded with Hall of Famers, the 1940 Play Ball set provides variety and value to any collector. After launching their initial effort in 1939, Gum Inc. offered a larger set in 1940. One major difference, a difference that makes the 1940 Play Ball set unique for its time, is the fact that this set included former major league stars, most of whom had just been inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1939, Cooperstown's inaugural year, or who were inducted shortly thereafter. Offered here is a Complete Set of 240 cards, less 1 card (#27 Ted Williams), that have all been graded by PSA with a GPA 5.71, and ranks Number 8 on the PSA Registry, with an SMR value of over $17,500.

This near set is highlighted by the following stars: #1 Joe DiMaggio (condition sensitive because it leads off the set) PSA 6, #6 Lefty Gomez PSA 6, #7 Red Ruffing PSA 6, #21 Rick Ferrell PSA 6.5, #38 Bobby Doerr PSA 6, #40 Hank Greenberg PSA 5.5, #41 Charley Gehringer PSA 6, #46 Earl Averill PSA 5, #87 Carl Hubbell PSA 5, #88 Mel Ott PSA 5.5, #102 Chuck Klein PSA 5, #104 Big Poison Waner PSA 5, #105 Lloyd Waner PSA 6, #107 Arky Vaughn PSA 7, #119 Grover Alexander PSA 5 , #120 Walter Johnson PSA 6, #132 Connie Mack PSA 5.5 , #133 Jimmy Foxx PSA 6, #134 Joe Cronin PSA 4, #141 Casey Stengel PSA 4, #153 Bill McKechnie PSA 6, #167 Frankie Frisch PSA 6, #168 Honus Wagner PSA 7, #170 Tris Speaker PSA 5, #171 Harry Heilmann, PSA 6, #172 Chief Bender PSA 5, #173 Larry Lajoie PSA 6, #174 Johnny Evers PSA 5, #175 Christy Mathewson PSA 6, #177 Home Run Baker PSA 5, #179 George Sisler PSA 5, #180 Mickey Cochrane PSA 6, #223 Hugh Jennings PSA 6, #224 Pie Traynor PSA 6, #225 Shoeless Joe Jackson PSA 5, #226 Harry Hooper 4.5, #236 John McGraw PSA 6, and #238 Wee Willie Keeler PSA 7!!

This set obviously set out to honor the opening of the Hall of Fame and it has stars galore unlike the smaller 1939 and 1941 Play Ball Sets. The inclusion of Joe Jackson, the "Black Sox" player banned from baseball in 1920, who had not appeared on a baseball card for nearly 20 years by 1940, suggests that the folks at Play Ball saw him a star and a possible future Hall of Famer despite his being expelled from baseball. IF YOU EVER WANTED A SUPER COLLECTION OF HALL OF FAMERS, THIS SET IS FOR YOU.
