1911 M116 Sporting Life Christy Mathewson "Blue Background" Variation PSA 7 NM
RARE MATTY!!! Presented here is an extraordinary PSA Near Mint 7 M116 Christy Mathewson "Blue" background version, proudly residing as one of only 4 examples at this hallowed tier with a sole specimen graded higher! The M116 Sporting Life cards were offered to subscribers of the Sporting Life periodical in 24 separate series of 12 cards each. While a majority of the issues included pastel backgrounds, the second printing for the first two series were issued with super bright turquoise blue backgrounds. For many of the blue background issued players, these subjects suffice as the tougher variation with one of those being the majestic Christy Mathewson. What a wonderful combination: one of baseball's greatest all-time hurlers affixed to his M116 subject via the timeless Carl Horner "Matty" portrait pose. Indeed, this exalted Horner image was utilized on only a handful of Mathewson's issues including his M116, W600 Sporting Life Cabinet and legendary 1915 Cracker Jack keepsakes. A superbly rendered incarnation of its delicate design, this seemingly uncirculated collectible, with nearly all of its physical subtleties intact, is well-worthy of inclusion in the finest M116 compilation.
