1888 Old Judge N173 Cabinet Buck Ewing - "149-4; Throw, R/Arm Extended Forward Head High" (SGC 4 VG/EX) - "1 of 2"; Only 3 Graded Higher on the Combined SGC & PSA "Pop" Charts!
In 1888, Goodwin & Co. released the N173 Old Judge cabinet photograph set to align with the smaller N172 set of "tobacco cards" issued starting in 1887. Only available as a coupon exchange promotion premium, each 4-1/4" x 6-1/2" cabinet photo featured one of 500 National, Western or American League players. Encapsulated as an SGC 4 VG/EX, this example is one of seven image varieties of Buck Ewing, showing the New York Giants catcher and check listed as "throwing with his right arm extended forward". The image displays nominal blemishes, most notably at his left knee and above the ball in his hand. The near flawless back shows only a minor blemish at the right center. Conservative grading on this visually pleasing example.
