(LOT 340)
1961 Paul Hornung Sports Illustrated Image - PSA Type 1 Encapsulated Sports Illustrated Photo – Measures Approx. 7-7/8" x 10"

Along with Vince Lombardi and Bart Starr, Paul Hornung was the one of the primary reasons the Green Bay Packers dominated the NFL throughout the 1960's. A renowned Heisman Trophy winner at Notre Dame, Hornung played a key role in four Packer NFL championships. One of the most versatile gridiron players to ever suit up, he dominated both the halfback and field goal kicker positions and led the league in scoring three straight seasons from 1959 thru 1961. A two-time MVP winner, Hornung's name is eternally embellished in both the College and Professional Football Hall of Fames. This magnificent 1961 PSA Type 1 Sports Illustrated offering reveals the superstar running back rambling through the Chicago Bears defense on November 12, 1961, with Green Bay defeating Chicago by a 31-28 score (verso inadvertently states November 26th).

In typical fashion, Hornung would score 2 touchdowns (one rushing; one receiving) and also kick a 51-yard field goal. Measuring approximately 7-7/8" x 10", the superbly contrasted image is spine tingling to say the least, as Horning carries the football donning his classic #5 Packers road flannels at Chicago's Wrigley Field. Remarkable as it may seem, this nearly 60-year old borderless illustration shows no major surface flaws, retaining a majority of its original luster. A significant Sports Illustrated related Type 1 photo, it conjures up vivid memories of how this star performer led the 1961 Packers to an 11-3 regular season record, ultimately winning the NFL Championship by crushing the N.Y. Giants in the title game via a 37-0 lopsided score!
