(LOT 307)
c.1952 Eddie Mathews Rookie Image - PSA Type 1 Encapsulated William Jacobellis Photo – Measures Approx. 8" x 10"

Arguably one of the greatest 3rd basemen in baseball history, similar to Eddie Mathew's esteemed stature comes along this sensational PSA Type 1 "ROOKIE" photo that was issued by the renowned photographer William Jacobellis. The power-hitting 3rd baseman slugged 512 lifetime home runs at a time when reaching 500 round trippers was a near-impossible task, and until Mike Schmidt came along, he held the all-time 3rd base homer record with 486 round trippers. Synonymous with Mathews' remarkable feats is the prestige associated with this image due to the fact it was taken by the legendary Jacobellis. Advanced photo enthusiasts are well aware of the prestige associated with any "Jacobellis" photo with some of his revered contact proofs previously selling for record prices including "rookie era" images for Mantle, Mays and Namath.

Mathews made his MLB debut in 1952 with the Boston Braves, and after playing a full season in "Beantown", he moved on to the Milwaukee Braves where he teamed up with the iconic Henry Aaron to form one of the greatest "one-two" batting punches in baseball history. The image itself depicts a magnificent batting pose of Mathews during his rookie campaign with Boston as he completes his mighty left-handed swing. Extremely well-centered, you will not find another image emanating finer contrast or clarity, and no obtrusive flaws are evident on the relatively clean surface. The final high-point is the critical WILLIAM JACOBELLIS credit stamp on the flipside, with this esteemed Mathews illustration certainly residing as one of his most defining rookie-era keepsakes!
