(LOT 292)
c.1940's Yankee Stadium PSA Type 1 ACME Newspictures Photo - Measures Approx. 6-1/2" x 8-1/2"

At the start of the 1923 season, sharing the Polo Grounds with the New York Giants would ultimately end, with the exalted opening of the newly constructed Yankee Stadium in the Bronx taking place on April 18, 1923. Appropriately dubbed "The House That Ruth Built", the Yankees would host their arch rival Boston Red Sox before a packed house of some 74,200 fans. Ironically, it was the "Sultan of Swat" that would hit the first home run ever in the newly built stadium on that fabled April 18th afternoon, belting a 3-run round-tripper off of a Howard Ehmke offering deep into the right field seats in the bottom of the third inning.

The Yankees would go on to win 4-1 behind the stellar 3-hit pitching of ace hurler Bob Shawkey. The Yankees would capture their first of twenty-seven world championships that fabled 1923 campaign, and no ballpark carries the unparalleled prestige of the original Yankee Stadium. This classic PSA Type 1 6-1/2" x 8-1/2" offering portrays an awe-inspiring aerial view of the "Cathedral-like" Yankee Stadium during the 1940's. Based on the American Flag colored "bunting" that can be seen along the upper and lower deck rails, we can only assume this is either an opening day or World Series game. A relatively clean surface, superb clarity and ACME NEWSPICTURES credit stamp on the verso are the highlights of this hallowed image that captures a full view of America's most historic ballpark during a decade when they captured four World Series titles!
