(LOT 291)
1938 World Series - Lou Gehrig Argues w/Umpire – PSA Type 1 Encapsulated International News Photo – Measures Approx. 8" x 10" - PSA/DNA LOA

Atypical to say the least, this eclectic 1938 PSA Type 1 photo depicts the immortal Lou Gehrig vehemently arguing with home plate umpire Moran after being called out on strikes in the eighth inning of game#1 of the 1938 World Series. As avid baseball fans are well aware of, Gehrig was known for his tranquil/laid-back personality and to see him lose control over a called third strike is certainly a complete anomaly. Fortunately for the Bronx Bombers, they would win this October 5th game played at Wrigley Field by a 3-1 score behind the outstanding pitching of Hall of Famer Red Ruffing, eventually sweeping the Cubs in four straight games to claim their third consecutive World Championship. Measuring approximately 8" x 10", the photo itself reveals a brilliant central image that emanates spectacular contrast and resolution, with most of the stray wrinkles situated along the upper border. For full disclosure, there is a pinhole in the center of the upper border, and the verso includes the INTERNATIONAL NEWS PHOTOS credit stamp as well as a significant caption providing details of the rather obscure image. Sad to say, this would literally be the "Iron Horse's" last hurrah for in early 1939, he was diagnosed with the tragic ALS disease that would ultimately claim his life at the tender young age of 37.
