(LOT 270)
c.1927 Rogers Hornsby PSA Type 1 Charles Conlon Encapsulated Photo - Measures Approx. 6-1/4" x 8"

After leading the Cardinals to their 1926 World Championship, the great Rogers Hornsby was traded to the New York Giants for Hall of Fame second sacker Frankie Frisch and Jimmy Ring. Although he only played a single season with the New York club, Hornsby didn't disappoint the "Big Apple" faithful, batting a robust .361 while knocking in 125 runs and belting 26 round trippers. The iconic photographer Charles Conlon struck this amazing Type 1 portrait image of the immortal Hornsby during that 1927 campaign, portraying "The Rajah" in his classic Giants cap and pinstriped uniform. While several stray scratches are evident near the facial area, their faint character do not impede the stoic central image that emanates super clear clarity and near-perfect contrast. No obtrusive blemishes are evident and the verso reveals the following pencil notations, all written in Conlon's hand: "Rogers HORNSBY – Giants – Conlon." Rogers Hornsby's legacy as baseball's arguable greatest right-handed all-time hitter is justified by his incredible .358 lifetime batting average that stands only second to Ty Cobb's .366 mark. Even more impressive was that in a five-year span from 1921 thru 1925, Hornsby achieved three .400+ batting seasons and a record-setting .401 batting average, substantiating why enthusiasts seek his most prized artifacts such as this world-class 1927 Type 1 Conlon memento!
