1914 Jim Thorpe PSA Type I Encapsulated George Grantham Bain Photo - Measures Approx. 4" x 5" – (Incl. PSA Type 1 LOA)

The 1914 baseball campaign would see the world's greatest athlete, Jim Thorpe, partake in his second season with the New York Giants as a part-time outfielder and pinch hitter. This outstanding Jim Thorpe PSA Type 1 photo taken during the 1914 season by renowned photographer George Grantham Bain portrays the immortal 20th century star in a classic batting pose, donning his period-style N.Y. Giants uniform. A few starry wrinkles and even corner wear doesn't impede the overall sparkling aesthetics, highlighted by near-perfect contrast and clarity as Thorpe prepares to swing his mighty lumber. One of the greatest all-around athletes ever, the immortal Jim Thorpe dominated various Olympic events (including winning gold medals in the 1912 pentathlon and decathlon) as well as playing professional baseball and football during the early 1910's.

His storied amateur career at Carlisle Indian School included two amazing All-American seasons in 1911 and 1912, with Thorpe leading Carlisle to the National Championship in 1912. His remaining baseball batting photos are few and far between, with this 4" x 5" marvel's final superlative being the several Culver captions that typically hide most of the Bain credit stamp on the verso. Interestingly enough, the flipside's APR 18, 1914 date stamp represents the Giant's opening day against the Philadelphia Phillies, with the Giants and their lefthanded ace Rube Marquard falling to the immortal Grover Alexander by a 10-1 score. One of Thorpe's most captivating images, it turns back the clock to the decade when this remarkable athlete would test the waters in both professional baseball and football, as well as earning iconic stature via his unfathomable performance in the 1912 Olympics!
