This ultra-rare PSA Type 1 illustration of the Giants formidable second baseman Larry Doyle provides a classic portrait pose of the slick-fielding star who dominated his position for 14 stellar seasons. Doyle would end his stellar 14-year career with an outstanding .290 lifetime batting average while posting five .300+ campaigns and claiming the 1912 MVP, a season in which he ably assisted the Giants in winning the National League pennant via his .330 batting average. Aside from Doyle's playing excellence, what makes this photo so special is that it was the exact image utilized for his 1914 Cracker Jack #4 subject. Indeed, in 1914, the prestigious candy corn confectionery company chose Larry Doyle as their #4 subject, with this exalted American Press Association illustration ultimately utilized as the exact image to place on Doyle's legendary Cracker Jack issue.

We don't need to remind photo enthusiasts of the surging collecting niche of locating original photos utilized for that player's particular baseball card, and these same hobbyists are well aware that finding original Cracker Jack related images is a near-impossible task. While the 8" x 10" offering certainly includes a series of obtrusive blemishes, the critical Doyle central image has remained relatively unscathed. Major surrounding flaws include scattered wrinkles, glaring chips on all four corners, a 7-3/4" narrow strip of paper residue affixed along the right edge and a silver gelatin based "hallow-like" emulsion surrounding Doyle's candid image.
