(LOT 148)
Babe Ruth 1922 E120 American Caramel (SGC Fair 1.5)

The Lancaster, PA. based American Caramel Company followed up their highly successful 1921 black & white candy baseball card set by issuing a staggering 240 subjects with their 1922 candy product. The company framed the player images with ornate oval designs, with the American League players issued in sepia toned colors and National League subjects depicted in blue. As with most 1920 issues, the most distinguished, desirable and valuable subject is the immortal George Herman "Babe" Ruth presented here in a super eye pleasing SGC 1.5 holder. Any card of the great "Bambino" immediately arouses interest amongst the memorabilia circuit, let alone one that was issued during Ruth's early New York playing days. Whether it is his hallowed rookie card, tough to find early 1920's caramel issues or the plentiful 1933 Goudey gum cards, there is an on-going frenzy to capture almost anything associated with his revered name.

A classic Babe Ruth "holding ball" sepia-toned image graces the elaborate oval frame, with the "Babe's" hallowed pose reflecting fine contrast and vivid registration. Accounting for the grade is some soiling near the lower right edge, modest corner wear and an area of paper loss on the verso's lower left quadrant. Early 1920's cards of Babe Ruth, while already valuable, still retain significant growth potential via their low-end population report counts that represent a mere fraction of the seemingly countless number of 1933 Goudey Ruth's. Considering that the "Bambino" will forever retain the title as baseball's premier icon, one would speculate that the price tags for his scarce and undervalued 1922 E120 Caramel subject will eventually soar in value, justifying why any esteemed collector should make this card their own!
