1921 Schapira Bros. Babe Ruth Portrait Subject "Including Side Arrows" (PSA "Authentic")
One of the most eclectic and earliest Babe Ruth Yankee baseball card issues are the seven different subjects hand cut from the 1921 Schapira Bros. candy boxes, with purchasers able to redeem 250 candy box cards for an autographed Babe Ruth baseball. Every box included a portrait image of Ruth on one side (some portrait cards included arrows pointing down on each side vs. no arrows), with the box's opposite side reflecting one of five possible "in-action" images. Presented here is the standard portrait image 1921 Schapira Ruth including the arrows on each side, graded a PSA "Authentic" due to the typical manual cuts that were not realized outside the dotted line perimeter.
PSA's illustrious population report indicates that nearly two-thirds of the encapsulated portrait Ruth's have received authentic grades primarily due to this issue. Most significantly, the actual card reveals solid VG/EX aesthetics (only a few starry wrinkles are evident), with the colorful Babe Ruth portrait image, bold red background and redemption prize text all retaining striking visual appeal. One of the "Sultan of Swat's" earliest Yankee baseball card subjects, its 1921 issue date and brilliant red hues has always placed it as a collector favorite among the myriad of vintage Ruth enthusiasts!
