(LOT 88)
1972 Topps #79 Carlton Fisk Rookie Card (PSA Gem Mint 10)

One of the most sought-after rookie cards from the early 1970's is the revered 1972 Topps #79 Carlton Fisk inaugural subject that seldom surfaces in extremely high-grade condition. Plagued by skewed images and/or "tilts", it is an excruciating chore to find 1972 Topps cards sporting well-positioned illustrations, justifying why this absolutely breathtaking PSA Gem Mint 10 Carlton Fisk '72 Topps rookie card merits the highest hobby accolades. One of the most coveted post-1970 rookie cards, PSA's illustrious "Pop" chart substantiates that notion, listing a staggering 6,300+ encapsulated copies. Unfortunately for the most meticulous enthusiast, only 10 or 0.15% of those encapsulated examples have managed to achieve the "perfect" Gem Mint 10 assessment!

Hall of Famer Carlton Fisk truly stands as one of the greatest backstops in baseball history, playing his entire 24 career with the Boston Red Sox and Chicago White Sox. The 11-time All-Star finished his remarkable career with 376 round-trippers, 1330 runs batted in, a 1972 rookie of the year award, 3 silver sluggers and both of his uniform numbers ("27" w/Boston & "72" w/Chicago) retired for those respective teams. Yet, for all of his Cooperstown worthy accolades, he will always be best remembered for his 1975 World Series "walk-off" home run in game#6 at Fenway Park in the bottom of the 12th, with Fisk standing in the batting box and waving his hands towards the field of play in a classic effort to keep the batted ball in fair territory.

Obviously emanating pack-fresh attributes, Fisk joins two other Red Sox players (Mike Garman & Cecil Cooper) on this legendary rookie card that amazingly reveals near-perfect centering (only the slightest microscopic-like favoritism is evident towards the left edge). Most significantly, no "tilt" is evident, with the pinpoint corners, gleaming surfaces and brilliant images substantiating the rare "10" grade. Unquestionably residing as Carlton Fisk's most important card, its "Gem Mint 10" assessment immediately places it as one of the most exalted post-WWII rookie cards extant, anxiously awaiting a new home in one of the finest 1972 Topps or rookie card PSA Registered compilations!
