(LOT 1227)
Billy Southworth Signed Original Artwork – Measures Approx. 5" x 8" – JSA LOA

Presented here is an extremely eclectic Billy Southworth signed original artwork portrait image of the Cooperstown Inductee. Measuring approximately 5" x 8", it portrays the lefthanded hitting right-fielder donning his classic Boston Braves cap with Southworth scripting the following salutation in extremely bold black fountain pen: "Billy Southworth – Your sketch is perfectly wonderful." Southworth was "spot on" in his assessment of this boldly sketched pencil heirloom that includes the artist's name (Raitt) directly beneath Southworth's left ear. Presenting itself in relatively clean fashion, negligible flaws include a few light horizontal folds and some negligible edge chipping, but for the most part, the illustration has retained a majority of its original luster.

Hall of Famer Billy Southworth was a lifetime .297 hitter and fine outfielder over a stellar 13-year career; however, it was his managerial accomplishments that ultimately earned him a permanent home in Cooperstown, N.Y. From 1942 – 1944, his St. Louis Cardinals appeared in 3 consecutive World Series, with the Cardinals winning in 1942 and 1944. After a superb 7-year tenure as the Cardinals field general, he eventually returned to Boston to manage the Braves in 1946 and led them to the National League pennant in 1948 (although they would lose the Fall Classic to the Cleveland Indians). Seldom do any Billy Southworth signed artifacts surface for the taking, let alone an autographed original artwork image that has valiantly withstood the test of time!
