(LOT 598)
1889 Old Judge N172 Billy Nash/Charles Radbourn "340-1 Tagging Falling Player (Charles Radbourn)" Pose (PSA NM+ 7.5) - "1 of 1"; Only One Example Graded Higher"

This ultra-obscure PSA NM+ 7.5 1889 Old Judge "Billy Nash tagging Charles Radbourn" offering has achieved the second highest grade on the illustrious PSA "Pop" chart! Indeed, PSA has currently encapsulated only 4 of these scant subjects, with this "1 of 1" masterpiece only bested by a single PSA 8 specimen. The most sophisticated Old Judge/N172 collectors are constantly seeking super eye pleasing image photography, and this sensational Nash/Radbourn "340-1 Tagging Falling Player" pose truly stands as one of this subject's aesthetically pleasing examples. Hall of Famer Charles Gardner Radbourn (being tagged by Nash). Regarding the player tagging Radbourn, few people realize that during his stint with the Philadelphia Athletics, Billy Nash actually scouted the immortal Napoleon Lajoie in Fall River, MA. during his 1896 role as player/manager.

The Nash and Radbourn representation on this brilliant offering reveals Nash placing his left hand on Radbourn's back, creating a classic "tagging" pose that is ultra-popular with Old Judge enthusiasts. Crystal clear clarity and modestly light contrast combine to formulate a nearly "3-D" effect, with the timeless image extremely well-centered between four super clean borders. The lower text boldly reads: "NASH, 3d B., Bostons – Copyright by GOODWIN & CO., 1888 - OLD JUDGE – CIGARETTE FACTORY, GOODWIN & CO., New York.", and it should be noted that the "1888 Copyright" relates to the year the actual image was originally taken, with this cardboard heirloom released in the 1889 calendar year. The corners have retained a majority of their factory issued right-angled formations and the clean surfaces reveal no glaring flaws, whatsoever. Seldom surfacing for the taking, it depicts two 19th century stars including legendary Cooperstown Inductee Charles "Old Hoss" Radbourn, remarkably retaining a majority of its original factory issued attributes that surely justify the "1 of 1" PSA NM+ 7.5 assessment!
