(LOT 188)
Magnificent Mickey Mantle AUTOGRAPHED 1951 Rookie Image - PSA Type 2 Encapsulated United Press International News Photo – Measures Approx. 8" x 10" (Includes PSA Type 2 LOA)

This remarkable Mickey Mantle 1951 Rookie Image stands as one of his most enthralling rookie illustrations, with this particular offering including a brilliant "9/10" bold blue sharpie autograph scripted across his classic Yankee pinstripe jersey! Dubbed a "Type 2" image from the illustrious PSA Authentication Company, what stands out is that this iconic 8" x 10" image just happens to be a restrike from the late 1950's/early 1960's, only some 8-10 years after the original negative was issued. As photo enthusiasts are fully aware, most Type 2 restrikes from the original negative are created a significant number of years later (several decades later to say the least), with this particular offering only issued some 7-10 years after the image's inaugural 1951 issue date. The comments section on the accompanying PSA LOA clearly substantiate that notion, reading: "Photo is a later issued c.1958-62 restrike made off the original negative by UPI featuring an image originally taken in 1951 in Mantle's rookie season.

Mickey Mantle PSA/DNA Certified Autograph." Incredibly, its approximate 60-year existence still finds it in remarkable condition, portraying crystal-clear clarity and near-perfect contrast and eluding any obtrusive surface flaws. Simply stated, its unparalleled definition exhibits an almost "3-D" like aura as a young Mickey Mantle literally appears as if he is ready to step right out of the photograph. Likewise, the imposing blue sharpie signature affixed across his upper chest area is absolutely sensational, most likely bordering on a perfect "10" grade. The relatively clean black & white surface reveals no glaring flaws, with the most notable scattered creases situated near the upper right corner and directly beneath Mantle's right elbow. The "Mick's" stoic facial expression truly tells the story as this aspiring 19-year old phenom is about to embark on a career that will place him as the embodiment of a National hero.

Indeed, word was spreading like a wildfire of an almost "godly" like superstar from Commerce, Oklahoma named Mickey Charles Mantle. Nicknamed the "Commerce Comet" due to his blinding speed, Mantle left his minor league Joplin, MO. team to join the Yankees at the beginning of the 1951 season, and although he had to be sent back to the minors for a brief period due to a serious batting slump, Mantle ultimately returned to the "big-show" for good to become one of baseball's all-time immortals. That said, considering the momentous "hype" associated with any rookie-era collectible, what could be more rewarding than this hallowed 1951 Mickey Mantle rookie image that includes one of his finest signatures extant!
