(LOT 164)
c.1936 Lou Gehrig "Feet" PSA Type 1 Encapsulated ACME NEWSPICTURES Photo – Measures Approx. 5" x 6"

A rather odd "Iron Horse" offering, this PSA Type 1 photo reveals Gehrig's lower legs, focusing in on his "feet" that kept him going on an MLB ballfield for 2,130 consecutive games. Based on the verso's critical caption, we have dated this photo to August 1936, since the caption mentions Gehrig closing in on his 1,800th consecutive game, breaking the runs scored mark with 11 consecutive years and tying Al Simmons' 11 consecutive seasons of 100 or more R.B.I.'s, all of which occurred in the 1936 campaign.

Interestingly enough, the caption also states that Gehrig is approaching several Babe Ruth single-season records including 177 runs scored and 60 homers. While Lou would fall short for achieving both those records, he would end the season with unfathomable batting figures including 49 dingers, 152 R.B.I.'s, a .354 average and 1.174 OPS! These world-class numbers led the Yankees to their inaugural World Championship without the "Sultan of Swat" and rightfully earn Gehrig his second A.L. MVP award. An extremely well-centered image, this 5" x 6" that is resides over the classic ACME NEWSPICTURES credit stamp. As an aftermath, Gehrig would continue his assault on A.L. pitchers for two more seasons that extended his R.B.I. and runs scored streaks to a remarkable 13 consecutive seasons!
